Overview

This worksheet is intended to help calculate the maximum tolerable amount of common contaminants that can exist in various food products including Ready-to- Use (RUTF) foods, Lipid Nutritional Supplements (LNS) and many other products. Some of these contaminants include cadmium, arsenic, lead, mercury, tin, and 3-MCPD; all which must be calculated to ensure product safety.

Tables with lab result interpretation and estimated daily exposure dose in a 5kg or 10kg child are  included. Calculations of the tolerable amount of contaminant in each RUTF product for a 5 kg child are included within the tables. This tool can be used in context with the document  ‘Expert advice on appropriate criteria and limits for contaminants in RUTF’ for further information on how levels were set.

Overall, this worksheet is important as a tool for calculating the maximum tolerability of contaminants in products procured by WFP and other agencies. Suppliers can use the document to assist with product safety when developing formulas and doing risk assessments.
