Overview
This document discusses the intended use of Ready-to-use Supplementary Food (RUSF), a food supplement for the dietary management of children 6 months and older with moderate acute malnutrition.
The document examines RUSF specifications, acceptable microbial limits, and processing methods. RUSF is a smooth, homogeneous paste that is meant to be eaten directly without any diluting or cooking, and is not meant to be a replacement for breast milk.
The paste should have cream to light or orangey brown colour, and should not have a dull, grey tinge, or other abnormal cast. The shelf life of the product shall be 24 months, and the product can be formulated with emulsifiers to help prevent phase separation. In terms of additives, only natural flavours are allowed in the production of RUSF. Permissible additives are outlined in this specification sheet, along with GMP, GHP and HACCP requirements. Applicable Codex standards are also referenced such as CXS 180-1991 General Standard for Labelling of and Claims for Foods for Special Medical Purposes, CXS 146-1985: General Standard for the Labelling of and Claims for Pre-packaged Foods for Special Dietary Uses, and CXS 1-1985: General Standard for the Labelling of Pre-packaged Food, all of which are mentioned in this document.
Overall, this document provides information regarding the intended use, specification, and acceptable limits and processing methods for RUSFs. This document can be used by suppliers to ensure their product meets the indicated specifications for RUSFs.
