Overview
CXS 192-1993 sets forth the conditions under which food additives may be used in all foods and should be viewed as the single authoritative reference point for food additives.
This document defines which food additives are acceptable and unacceptable to use and establishes the maximum levels of food additives in various food groups. The document contains three tables. Table one contains additives that are permitted to use under certain conditions in a wide range of food categories. The maximum level of additive is listed in the table for each additive and food category.
Table two lists out food categories or food items in which certain food additives are permitted. The maximum level of additive is listed in the table for each food item/category.
Table three describes additives that are permitted to be used in food in general, in accordance with GMP, unless otherwise specified. The corresponding commodity standard is referenced in this table along with the functional class of the additive.
Following this standard ensures that suppliers use food additives that are safe, in conformance with the standard and do not exceed the acceptable daily intake (ADI).
